Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar, met today in Jerusalem with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan, James Pitia Morgan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem.

Ahead of an expanded bilateral meeting, Foreign Minister Sa’ar made brief remarks during which he addressed the latest developments in the region, as well as the importance of growing the relations and cooperation between Israel and South Sudan.

Foreign Minister Sa’ar on the agreement with Lebanon: * “On Friday, in Washington, Israel signed *a framework agreement which reflects our desire for peace with Lebanon. Peace must be built on security. And security on our northern border, which can only be achieved by the disarmament of Hezbollah. This is a shared interest for both Israel and Lebanon.”

He stressed, “The ones who are violating Lebanon’s sovereignty are Iran and Hezbollah. Peace is tied to freeing Lebanon from the de-facto Iranian occupation under which it has lived for decades. The Israel Defense Force are in the security zone in southern Lebanon only because of the ongoing attacks and threats against Israel and its citizens by Hezbollah from Lebanese territory. Our only ambition is to live in peace and security.”

On relations with South Sudan, the Minister said: “We have strong bilateral relations – but Mr. Minister, I believe we can grow them stronger and stronger. Israel values its relationship with South Sudan. We are proud to have supported your establishment and independence. We are proud to have stood by your side ever since. We have also provided humanitarian assistance in the last year with the refugees coming from Sudan in the current crisis. Through Mashav, our international development agency, we continue to expand meaningful cooperation with South Sudan in many fields. We appreciate your voice supporting Israel in international forums.”

He concluded:
“You have visited some of the holy sites in Jerusalem. As the Jewish state, and as the only democracy in our region, we see great importance in safeguarding freedom of religion and protecting the holy sites. Israel’s Christian community is the only Christian community in the Middle East, which is flourishing and growing stronger. Unfortunately, this is not the reality around us. In your region and across Africa, the Christian community is facing the threat of jihadist terror. We are deeply concerned by this. The best and strongest answer to the threat of radical, extremist Islam is to stand strong together, as friends, in defense of the values that we share. “
