Dr. Lam Akol Launches his Election Campaign in Malakal

Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, leader of SPLM-DC yesterday evening launched his electoral campaign for the post of the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) in the Upper Nile State's capital town of Malakal.

Addressing the masses at the premises of his party in the neighborhood of Thawra Al-Jalaba, Akol affirmed that the party was concerned about democratic change and peaceful exercise of power in South Sudan, pointing out that the upcoming stages requires launching various reform programs by all Sudanese political parties.

He said the democratic change in Sudanese political life is a result of sincere efforts of the sons of the country, which must be preserved by conducting free and transparent elections meeting the expectations of all Sudanese disputing parties. He called on the public to vote for whom they deem appropriate to be entrusted with their wealth and lives when they go to ballots.

In his speech, Akol pledged - if he wins the seat of South Sudan Government- to work for continuing developmental projects in South Sudan, combating administrative and political corruption, delivering public freedoms; proceeding with the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), economic reform through exploiting available resources for citizens wellbeing and stability.

He expressed his gratitude to his Party's grassroots from their warm welcome to his delegation, which, according to him, was an indicative of awareness of the significance the stage.

JUBA, Southern Sudan (NSV) - SPLM-DC presidential candidate Dr. Lam Akol addressed supporters Saturday in Malakal as he was heading to Juba for his party's launching of the three-day campaign rallies for April polls.

Dr. Akol severed relations last year with the mainstream SPLM, leading him to form SPLM-DC which is now competing for the presidency of Southern Sudan.

While In Upper Nile, sources said Akol was received by crowds of supporters.

"The reception was like when the late hero was received in khartoum," referring to 2005 when Dr. Garang visited the capital after signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agremement.

Akol has criticised the GoSS for failing and he is promising Southern Sudanese that his party will work for interest of the South, including managing conflicts and eradicating corruption.

His visit to Juba is said to include an address to high ranking members of army, to share with them what he would do if elected president, "appreciating them for 21 years of service, including 5 years of protecting the CPA, and pledging support for SPLM."

Dr. Akol is also attending a southern Sudan political summit for all southern parties, which will be held in Juba under the auspices of former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, who is the current chairman of of the African Union-High Level Implementation Panel on Sudan.

The summit is dedicated to discussions around upcoming elections. On his camppaign route, Dr. Akol might visit Jonglei and Torit.
