For years, many young Africans have searched for a chance to prove themselves - not abroad, but right here at home. Among them is Charlie Brian, a young tech entrepreneur whose story is one of persistence, struggle, and an unshakable belief in Africa’s potential.
After years of trying, failing, learning, and starting again, Charlie has now launched Upkazi - a freelance platform designed and built in Africa, for Africa.
Upkazi gives young people the opportunity to create profiles, showcase their skills, and connect with clients who need services in design, technology, writing, business, marketing, and more. Unlike international platforms, it is tailored to Africa’s realities: mobile-first access, flexible work arrangements, and secure payment systems that ensure freelancers are fairly rewarded.
“Africa’s youth are talented and hardworking. What has been missing is infrastructure that allows them to shine,” Charlie said. “Upkazi is my way of saying: we don’t have to wait for opportunity to come from outside. We can build it ourselves.”
The platform is not just about transactions - it is about dignity and empowerment. By providing fair commissions, transparent reviews, and trust between clients and freelancers, Upkazi seeks to rewrite the story of work for a generation.
Charlie’s journey to this point has not been easy. Like many young Africans, he faced setbacks and disappointments. But through each challenge, he kept building, learning, and holding onto a vision: that African youth deserve tools to succeed in the digital age.
Today, that vision stands alive in Upkazi. It is more than a business - it is a symbol of resilience, hope, and the belief that Africa’s future will be built by its own sons and daughters.
As one reader remarked: “When our youth succeed, it is not just their victory. It is ours too.”
