The ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement has announced a series of activities to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the SPLM/SPLA liberation struggle, with President Salva Kiir Mayardit expected to deliver a national address during celebrations at Juba National Stadium on 16 May.

The anniversary marks the beginning of the armed struggle that lasted 21 years and eventually led to the independence of South Sudan in July 2011.

Speaking to journalists in Juba, Acting SPLM Secretary General, Cde. Amb. Jimmy Atilio, said President Kiir, who also serves as Chairman of the SPLM, will outline the party’s vision and direction for the country during the celebrations.

“The president, who is the Chairman of the SPLM and President of the Republic, will deliver the main message to the nation. Through that address, the country will hear the vision and direction ahead,” Jimmy said.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme: “Towards a Peaceful and Prosperous South Sudan.”

According to the organizers, the commemorations will begin with the reception of President Kiir at Juba International Airport following his return from Uganda, where he attended official engagements.

Jimmy described the planned welcome as a gesture of solidarity and appreciation for the SPLM leadership during the anniversary period.

Activities scheduled for the main event at Juba National Stadium include traditional wrestling competitions, cultural dances, comedy performances, music shows, and revolutionary songs associated with the liberation era.

Organizers said wrestling matches will involve participants from Lakes State, Jonglei State, and Central Equatoria State.

Jimmy also reflected on the historical significance of SPLM Day, describing it as a symbol of resistance against marginalization, inequality, and policies imposed on the people of South Sudan during the Sudanese civil war period.

He called on South Sudanese citizens to work together to preserve peace, unity, and national prosperity as the country commemorates the anniversary.
