Church Attack in Rimenze, South Sudan Displaces Thousands

11/19/2019 South Sudan (International Christian Concern) – An attack on the Rimenze Catholic Church in South Sudan has left thousands of people without homes or hope and four people dead. Reports came out that and attack took place on the church compound and surrounding village on November 7^th.  The gunmen are still unknown and no groups have claimed responsibility. This makes the reason for the attack hard to determine. According to eyewitnesses, many of the surrounding homes were looted and burned, and everyone has been sleeping in the bush since then. This may mean that it was a criminal attack with the purpose of stealing supplies.

The South Sudanese government has not helped in any way up until this point. This includes that they have not provided any security, leaving the people to live in fear of another attack. “Up to now people are still sleeping in the bush, because there is no security. Even they had come to the church and there is no security in the church. There is no information about the government tackling the security here’‘, said Reverend Father Peter Babetimo of the Rimenze Catholic Church to AfricaNews.com.

This type of fighting has been constant in South Sudan since the fallout between the country’s president Salva Kiir, and his one-time vice president, Riek Machar. The world has watched as the people of South Sudan has suffered. This was to end on November 12^th when both sides were supposed to signed an agreement for a new government. This was postponed for 100 more days and is sure to lead to more issues. Please be praying for those in South Sudan who continue to suffer as their government fails to protect them.
