GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF TASKS AND OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED

Recruitment for this position is done on a local basis, whether or not the candidate is a resident of the duty station. This incumbent will be hired as a National Project Personnel (NPP) and extension of contract is subject to extension of the mandate and availability of funds. Staff members are subject to the authority of the FAO Representative and to assignment by him/her; in this context staffs are expected to periodically move to a new location in accordance with established rules and procedures.


Organizational Setting and Reporting:

The Driver/mechanic is responsible for driving the country office staff of FAO Representations. He/she ensures the safety, technical soundness and comfort of the vehicle(s) assigned. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Transport Coordinator and performs the following duties:

  • Drives the country office staff and their official visitors on official trips, as well as the FAO Representative and his/her visitors on occasions as and when required;  
  • Meets staff and official visitors at the airport; facilitates immigration and customs formalities, hotel check-in, and other local procedures;
  • Logs official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, and expenditures related to transportation/vehicles, vehicle servicing, and repairs;
  • Ensures day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s); checks oil, water, battery, tires, and performs minor repairs and arranges for any other repairs necessary to keep the vehicle safe and technically sound at all times in timely manner; maintains the vehicle(s) in a clean condition;
  • Handles local and organizational formalities when involved in an accident; ensures that in this case all organizational and national rules, regulations and procedures are followed correctly;
  • Collects and delivers mail, documents, pouches, and other communications/items to and from the country office; airport, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites, etc., to take and deliver items and communications and keeps records as required;
  • Undertakes the routine maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical equipment as necessary;
  • Diagnoses vehicle and equipment faults and repairs as necessary;
  • Accurately records all work done and parts used in the format provided by the Logistics Office in Juba;
  • Specifically, carries out routine checks and preventative maintenance as per the manufacturer’s schedule;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualification Requirements

Education:

Completed secondary education (high school diploma or equivalent). Be in Possession of valid driver’s license.


Work Experience:

Two (2) years of work experience as a driver; experience in a UN or international organization is an advantage. Having a flawless, safe driving record is an asset.


Languages:

Good knowledge of the local language(s) (level B). Fair knowledge (level A) of the FAO official language used at the duty station (English) is required.


Knowledge and Skills:

Good knowledge of the local driving rules and regulations; basic skills in minor vehicle repair. The incumbent is expected to be punctual and extremely reliable, and to drive in a safe manner. Good sense of direction and knowledge of local conditions. Ability and flexibility to cope with extended working hours.


Interpersonal Communication Skills:

The Driver must have a polite and friendly attitude and treat his/her passengers with utmost respect. A tidy appearance, courtesy, discretion and a high level of trustworthiness are essential personal attributes; the Driver will be provided with a uniform that he/she shall wear while on duty.
