South Sudan and the United Nations today announced a US$1.16 billion dollar appeal for humanitarian aid in 2013. There were 114 aid agencies involved in the detailed plan to reach millions of people in South Sudan with food, medicine, shelter and other supplies.

With hunger impacting 40 percent of the population and many thousands displaced by violence and flooding, humanitarian aid is crucial. South Sudan's conflict with neighboring Sudan has created a refugee crisis. In addition, internal conflict in Jonglei, South Sudan has also caused displacement for many thousands.

The violence has struck an already impoverished population in South Sudan. Over half of South Sudan lives below the poverty line and under half of the children are enrolled in primary school.

Joseph Lual Achui, South Sudan's Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, says, "the humanitarian situation in South Sudan is fragile. Although the 16 months since independence have seen much progress in our young nation, we will still need to work together to meet the needs of all people who are in need in the country. As such, we welcome and will facilitate the critical work of NGOs and UN agencies here.’
