On Friday, Ambassador Pelle Enarsson joined the launch of the public campaign on ending conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) and inclusive transitional justice processes in Juba. The launch marks the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, observed annually on 19 June.
The advocacy event, organised by the Centre for Inclusive Governance, Peace and Justice in collaboration with the Dr Denis Mukwege Foundation, Legal Action Worldwide, and the Survivors Network in South Sudan, featured symbolic candle and lantern lighting, an official ribbon-cutting, and statements and speeches from invited guests.
In his address at the launch, Ambassador Enarsson said that conflict-related sexual violence is a grave violation of human rights and international humanitarian law and may constitute a war crime or crime against humanity.
"In South Sudan, conflict-related sexual violence has devastated the lives of thousands of women and children. Survivors must be at the centre of our response," he said.
"The European Union stands with the survivors of sexual violence in South Sudan. Our support is guided by dignity, survivor-centred action, women's participation, and accountability. We are committed to strengthening protection, promoting women's leadership, and integrating gender into all our programmes."
The EU in South Sudan supports women's rights organisations and global initiatives for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. "Let us renew our commitment to listening to survivors, supporting survivor-led action, strengthening accountability, and working together for justice and to prevent recurrence," Ambassador Enarsson concluded.
