St. Vincent de Paul Parish offers trauma healing sessions for more than 300 people

Salesians of Don Bosco’s St. Vincent de Paul Parish, located in Gumbo, South Sudan*, launched a six-month cycle of trauma healing sessions, bringing together more than 300 participants from both Don Bosco’s internally displaced community and the host parish community. The participants’ involvement demonstrates their desire for healing, reconciliation and unity.

Father David Tuli, rector and parish priest, initiated these sessions for people who have seen the horror of ongoing strife in the country. The sessions create a safe and welcoming atmosphere in which participants can share their experiences, express their pain, and listen to each other with respect and understanding.

A Salesian noted, “This process helps to reduce fear and mistrust and foster empathy and mutual respect between the different ethnic communities displaced by the ongoing conflicts. Through trauma healing, participants are encouraged to forgive, grow in emotional strength and promote peaceful coexistence. The sessions help to rebuild trust, strengthen relationships and cultivate a spirit of unity.”

Salesian missionaries in South Sudan are dedicated to providing programs and services across the country. Salesian missionaries provide education, social development services, nutrition programs, and health clinics for poor youth and their families. For some, the education offered at Salesian schools is the only opportunity to gain an education and the skills necessary for future employment.
