Former Electoral Commission Secretary Sam Rwakojo has revealed that the late Lucy Kalanzi had a personal connection with South Sudan President Salva Kiir, describing the two as friends.
Rwakojo made the remarks while delivering a eulogy at Kalanzi’s funeral, where he recounted her bold entrepreneurial ventures and unique ability to navigate high-level networks.
According to Rwakojo, shortly after South Sudan gained independence, Kalanzi travelled there alone and secured a major supply deal. When her clients defaulted on payment, she reportedly sought out President Kiir, who intervened to ensure she was paid.
“Lucy managed to meet the president of South Sudan and she got paid. The president of South Sudan was her friend somehow,” Rwakojo said.
He admitted that he never fully understood how Kalanzi managed to access the president and resolve the matter so effectively.
Rwakojo described Kalanzi as a discreet yet highly capable entrepreneur who often handled her business affairs independently, sometimes without even informing close family members.
“She was an entrepreneur of an amazing capacity. She would engage senior figures, including military generals, yet keep her dealings private,” he said.
Beyond business, Rwakojo highlighted Kalanzi’s commitment to her faith, noting that she actively participated in early morning street evangelism with members of the Phaneroo ministry.
He recalled initially opposing the practice, citing safety concerns, but was persuaded otherwise after a candid exchange with Kalanzi’s sister, Kiti Kiti.
“I thought the streets were a little bit safer than a nightclub, so I said, let it be,” he said.
Rwakojo also paid tribute to Kalanzi’s warm personality, describing her as affectionate, vibrant, and deeply personable.
“We produce children, but even among your children, you have friends. Lucy was my child, but she was also my friend,” he said.
Kalanzi is remembered as a dynamic entrepreneur and a woman of strong faith whose life touched many.
