WHO monitors malaria outbreak in South Sudan

The World Health Organization^[2] (WHO) recently announced monitoring a malaria outbreak in South Sudan.

According to the latest data, from the beginning of 2021 through December 19, 3,707,252 total malaria cases were reported in the east/central African country.

In addition, 2,923 deaths were recorded for a 0.1 percent case fatality.

Epidemic thresholds have been exceeded in several districts in the states with an upsurge occurring in Fangak County of Jonglei state.

According to WHO’s latest World malaria report^[3], there were an estimated 241 million malaria cases and 627,000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2020. This represents about 14 million more cases in 2020 compared to 2019, and 69,000 more deaths.

Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry the heaviest malaria burden, accounting for about 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of all deaths in 2020. About 80% of deaths in the region are among children under 5 years of age.

South Africa: All indicators suggest the country may have passed the peak of the fourth wave at a national level^[5]
