Nigeria, Senegal, and South Sudan registered wins in their first games at the FIBA AfroBasket 2021.

Nigeria beat Mali 81-73 in their first Group C game of the championship in Kigali, while Senegal ran riot over Uganda’s Silverbacks, winning 93-55.

The Teranga Lions showed a lot of grit and used their height and size to outshine Uganda, while the three-pointers for the silverbacks were elusive.

South Sudan did not even have to play their first game to win. 

Two Cameroon players tested positive upon arrival in Kigali on August 22, the players were asymptomatic, two other players then tested positive as well as a training staff member, according to the Cameroon Basketball Federation.

“In application of the FIBA COVID-19 protocol for competition, the Technical Committee of FIBA AfroBasket 2021 decided the game between Cameroon and South Sudan would not be played,” Alphonse Bilé, the Technical Committee president said in a statement.

Cameroon lost the game per forfeit and the game was awarded to South Sudan with a score of 20-0.

Cameroon will take on Uganda on Friday in the Silverbacks second game of the competition.
