AU Hopes Sudan-south, Sudan Meeting Will Have Positive Outcome

ADDIS ABABA, March 28 (BERNAMA-NNN-ENA) -- The chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission has expressed hope that the meeting between the leaders of Sudan and South Sudan in Juba early next month will have a positive outcome.

According to a statement received from the AU headquarters here Monday, the outcome of the meeting in the South Sudan capital will pave way for the resolution of all outstanding issues between the two countries on the basis of the agreed principle of "two viable States".

Jean Ping, the AU Commission chairman, reiterated the critical importance of the principle of "two viable States", which has been the basis for all the work of the AU High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) on Sudan in facilitating post-secession relations between the two countries, and which both governments have recently reaffirmed.

South Sudan became an independent nation on July 9, 2011 after its people voted overwhelmingly to secede from Sudan in a referendum early in the year.

Ping has sent letters to President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir of Sudan and President Salvakiir Mayardit of South Sudan to congratulate them on initialing the Framework Agreement on the Status of Nationals of the Other State and the Agreement on the Demarcation of the Boundary, on 13 March 2012 in Addis Ababa.

In these letters, Ping stressed that the progress made was clear illustration of the willingness of the two governments to build a mutually-beneficial relationship based on co-operation, the needs of their people and the fundamental principle of two viable States.

According to the statement, the AU through the AUHIP remains committed to assisting both States successfully conclude the negotiations on all outstanding issues in their post-secession relations.
