134 navy crew leave Dhaka on peacekeeping mission in South Sudan

BANFMU has so far successfully completed a total of 41 Operation Life Line on the 938 km long White Nile River

A second group of 67 navy crew has left Dhaka to join Bangladesh Navy's Force Marine Unit-6 in UN peacekeeping mission, South Sudan.

The crew departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday morning, according to a press release issued by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). 

Earlier, on July 25, the first group of 67 navy crew left Dhaka to join Force Marine Unit-6.

A marine unit of the Bangladesh Navy is deployed as a Force Marine Unit at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMIS).

The contingent has been tasked with ensuring the safe movement of the UN’s essential fuel, food, medicine and humanitarian aid barges; monitoring or controlling waterway piracy; gathering all intelligence information; informing the force headquarters, assisting local communities in firefighting; and rescuing wounded military and civilian personnel.

The contingent also provides emergency medical care to local people, transports essential supplies to military and civilian members of the mission in remote areas, as well as assist in any UN-mandated activity.

It is to be noted that the Bangladesh Force Marine Unit (BANFMU) has so far successfully completed a total of 41 Operation Life Lines (OLL) on the 938 km long White Nile River.

For more than two decades, the Bangladesh Navy has been participating in and fulfilling its responsibilities in international peacekeeping operations with great success -- for establishing peace and protecting human rights in various war-torn regions of the world.

In addition to South Sudan, the Bangladesh Navy has a warship deployed in Lebanon and the Mediterranean region as the only member of the United Nations Maritime Task Force.
