From: Global Affairs Canada
Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the announcement of a Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity in South Sudan. The establishment of an inclusive government is an important step toward national reconciliation and sustainable peace in South Sudan, paving the way for democratic elections, respect for human rights, as well as economic and social development.
We recognize the important compromises taken by President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar in this process and hope this marks a step towards peace for the people of South Sudan.
“Canada commends the efforts made to empower women, as demonstrated by their greater representation in the new government, even if the numbers fall short of the requirements of the 2018 peace agreement.
“Canada is a committed partner of the people of South Sudan, providing our support through development, humanitarian and peacebuilding assistance, including our military contribution to the UN peacekeeping operation in the country.
