Sudan govt, SPLM-N initial Political Document on Two Areas

The delegations of the Sudanese Government and the Malik Agar faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N Agar) initialled a Political Document at the Sudanese peace talks in the South Sudan capital Juba on Saturday, on issues of governance, powers and authorities in the Two Areas (South Kordofan and Blue Nile state).

The signing took place in the presence of the leadership council of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) rebel alliance, the South Sudan mediation, the United Nations, and international observers of the peace process.

The official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reports that Hasan Nasrallah of the government delegation signed on behalf of the Sudanese government, while Abdallah Eisa of the SPLM-N Agar delegation signed on behalf of the movement, and Dhieu Mathok for the South Sudanese mediation.

Member of the government delegation to the peace talks, Maulana El Taj, noted in press statements that “the signing of the document is an essential step in the process of achieving peace in Sudan,” referring to the necessity of readiness of the parties to the talks to face challenges of implementation of the agreement in reality. He commended efforts of the South Sudan mediation in bringing the parties closer.

El Taj promised the Sudanese people closer realisation of peace which he indicated is “matching with slogans of the glorious revolution of December”.

The head of the South Sudan mediation team, Tut Galuak, promised the Sudanese people that “the coming peace as a reality”, noting that the South Sudan government has started preparations for the celebration of Sudan’s peace with the reception of the guests of the celebrations from Sudan and abroad.

He indicated that the rest of the national issues of the peace process will be discussed by the revolutionary factions as one bloc with the government delegation.

The Deputy Chairman of the SPLM-N, Yasir Arman, explained that what has been included in the document had not even been achieved in the Naivasha Agreement signed in 2005^[1].

He asserted the SRF decision “to put an end to the armed action and return to Khartoum to continue the realisation of the national goals via political channels, and with a plain partnership with military and the civilian components”.

The Chairman of the SRF, El Hadi Idris extended thanks to the government and President of South Sudan, Silva Kiir for their support to the Sudan peace process, congratulating the two negotiating parties on the agreement, which he stressed its benefits for the peoples of the two areas. The head of the SRF emphasised the front’s commitment to reach a final peace agreement according to the April 9 date set by the mediation.
