The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix will arrive today in South Sudan to meet with political leaders, humanitarian actors, and internally displaced people living in Protection of Civilians’ sites.

He will be in the country till 3rd August 2017, according to Daniel Dickinson, UNMISS Spokesperson.

“Mr. Lacroix will hold meetings with Government officials, advocate for a country-wide cessation of hostilities, reinforce the importance of an inclusive political solution towards ending the current conflict, and greater cooperation with the UN Mission and humanitarian actors,” the UNMISS spokesperson said.

Lacroix will also undertake two field visits while in country, to the northern towns of Malakal and Bentiu, where UNMISS is protecting more than 145,000 people living in Protection of Civilians’ sites.

UNMISS has an authorized peacekeeping force of up to 17,000 troops from 54 Troop-Contributing Countries and up to 2100 police personnel, including individual police officers, formed police units and corrections officers.

Its Mission is to work with the people of South Sudan to protect civilians and to build durable peace.

According to UNMISS POC update of July, a total of number of civilians seeking safety in six Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites located on UNMISS bases is 217,969, as of 20th July 2017. The number include 114,683 in Bentiu, 30,551 in Malakal, 38,448 in Juba UN House, 1,940 in Bor, 651 in Melut and 169 in UNMISS base and 31,527 in the area adjacent to UNMISS in War.
