Don Cheadle speaks out: “Important development” as millions face “catastrophic” violence, starvation
February 26, 2024 (Washington, DC) - The United States today will appoint Tom Perriello as a new special envoy for Sudan, as that country faces escalating warfare, mass violence, and a potential famine. The announcement was confirmed in a statement to press today by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Don Cheadle, actor, activist, Advisory Board Member of The Sentry, said: “Millions of Sudanese face horrific violence and potential starvation. President Biden’s decision to step up and appoint a Special Envoy is an important and welcomed development. Tom Perriello is a strong choice to lead efforts in support of peace in Sudan, given his track record of diplomatic success in the region. The Sudanese people need a ceasefire and full humanitarian access immediately.”
John Prendergast, Co-Founder of The Sentry, said: "The appointment of a US Special Envoy to Sudan represents a desperately needed boost to peacemaking efforts in that war-shattered country. The choice of Tom Perriello, an experienced diplomat with a track-record of success in Africa, is a sign that President Biden and Secretary Blinken are escalating America's commitment to solving this crisis. With genocide again unfolding in Darfur and the country on the brink of a catastrophic famine, time is of the essence. With this support and continued bipartisan advocacy from Congress, the Envoy must immediately accelerate efforts to produce a ceasefire, full humanitarian access, and a just, inclusive political transition. Success will require President Biden and Secretary Blinken to utilize the US’s prime comparative advantage: the vast array of policy tools of financial pressure focused on anti-money laundering instruments and network-based sanctions."

About The Sentry
The Sentry is an investigative and policy organization that seeks to disable multinational predatory networks that benefit from violent conflict, repression, and kleptocracy. Pull back the curtain on wars, mass atrocities, and other human rights abuses, and you’ll find grand corruption and unchecked greed. These tragedies persist because the perpetrators rarely face meaningful consequences. The Sentry aims to alter the warped incentive structures that continually undermine peace and good governance. Our investigations follow the money as it is laundered from war zones to financial centers around the world. We provide evidence and strategies for governments, banks, and law enforcement to hold the perpetrators and enablers of violence and corruption to account. These efforts provide new leverage for human rights, peace, and anti-corruption efforts. Learn more: www.TheSentry.org
