By Vision ReporterPrime Minister Amama Mbabazi has said it would be cheaper for South Sudan to construct its oil pipeline to the Kenyan coast through Uganda under a joint venture with the Ugandan Government.Kenya and South Sudan in August signed an agreement for the construction of a 2,000km oil pipeline to the Kenyan port of Lamu.It is expected to deliver South Sudan’s crude oil to the rest of the world via the port. The construction is expected to begin next June and will cost $3b.While meeting the Italian undersecretary of state for foreign affairs, Staffan Domingo de Mistura, at Serena Hotel on Sunday, Mbabazi said the pipeline would benefit the region because more countries would contribute towards its construction and also use it.According to a press release from the Office of the Prime Minister, Mbabazi hailed Italians for introducing the Nile Perch into Lake Victoria in the 1950s, saying it increased Uganda’s exports and led to the development of fish processing factories.De Mistura called for joint ventures between Italian and Ugandan entrepreneurs. Italian companies are participating in the ongoing international trade fair at Lugogo.During the meeting, Mbabazi also briefed him on the situation in the Great Lakes Region.Italy is among the countries that fund the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) through the European Union and has pledged more assistance. Mbabazi said AMISOM had taken over most of the urban areas in Somalia from the al-Shabaab.He said there was need to reform the clan system of governance in Somalia to enhance mutual co-existence.He hailed the recent agreement between Sudan and South Sudan and called for an agreement among the countries along River Nile on how its waters would be shared.
