Nepali peacekeepers help UN strengthen early warning, civilian protection in South Sudan

JUBA: The Nepali peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) joined a series of integrated patrols across Lakes State, South Sudan, aimed at assessing security conditions, strengthening early warning systems and protecting civilians.

The patrols brought together Nepali peacekeepers, UN military observers and UN Police (UNPOL) officers, along with local communities and authorities. The teams engaged with residents and local officials to assess security concerns and strengthen cooperation between the mission and communities.

During the patrols, participants discussed security challenges including cattle raiding, ambushes and looting, as well as humanitarian concerns affecting communities in Lakes State. These included drought, shortages of food and water, limited health services and inadequate infrastructure.

The patrols also focused on improving the flow of information between communities, local authorities and UN personnel. UNMISS said the engagements helped strengthen community confidence, support early identification of potential security threats and encourage local efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts.

The integrated patrols are part of UNMISS efforts to maintain contact with communities, monitor security conditions and support civilian protection in South Sudan. The participation of Nepali peacekeepers forms part of Nepal’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations in the country.
