EU and South Sudan Convene Third Steering Committee Meeting on Green Economy Initiative

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the European Union convened the third Steering Committee meeting of the Green and Resilient Economy Team Europe Initiative (GRE TEI) in Juba on Monday, reaffirming a joint commitment to transforming South Sudan's agricultural sector.

The meeting brought together line ministries, co-funding donors — Germany, the Netherlands and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) — and implementing partners to review progress, strengthen coordination, and chart a path forward.

“Today’s Steering Committee confirmed the value of working together across institutions and partners to support agriculture, rural livelihoods and food security in South Sudan. Through the Green and Resilient Economy Team Europe Initiative, the European Union and its partners are helping to connect local production, inclusive value chains and sustainable management of natural resources for the benefit of communities across the country,” said Massimo Scalorbi, Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation to South Sudan.

Hon. Dr Kenyi affirmed the Ministry’s position, saying “The Ministry is committed to accelerating the development and implementation of key policies and legal frameworks, which will provide the foundation for longer agricultural transformation and sustainable food systems”.

The initiative brings together six projects focusing on agriculture, rural livelihoods, food security and natural resource protection. It has a particular focus on internally displaced persons, refugees, returnees, women and young people.

Co-funded by the EU, Germany, the Netherlands and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and implemented by the FAO, the WFP, the ITC, the GIZ, the SNV, CARITAS, the ACTED, the IFDC, the African Parks Network and others, the GRE TEI initiative is helping to connect local production to inclusive markets and make climate-smart, resilient growth accessible to the communities that need it most.

There is one programme comprising six projects worth €115.6 million, all with the same goal: to make South Sudan greener and more food-secure.
