Kenyan defender eyes local comeback after memorable South Sudan stint

After several seasons in South Sudan, experienced defender Terra Fernandez is set for a return to Kenyan football, bringing with him valuable continental experience and memories of an eventful spell with Atlabara FC.

Fernandez leaves Juba having been part of one of South Sudan's traditional football powerhouses during a period of transition.

His time at Atlabara included domestic title challenges and appearances on the continental stage after the club featured in the CECAFA Kagame Cup and the CAF Champions League following their league triumph.

While Atlabara were unable to reclaim the league crown in the seasons that followed, Fernandez believes the experience helped shape him both as a footballer and as a person.

"South Sudan surprised a lot of people. Every season the league became more competitive and more professional. Clubs are investing more, the players are improving, and the fans are becoming more passionate. I genuinely believe South Sudan football is on an upward trajectory," Fernandez says.

The defender also reflected on why Atlabara could not replicate the success of their title-winning campaign, with rivals El Merreikh Bentiu eventually emerging as one of the league's dominant forces.

"When you become champions, every team raises their level against you. We also had changes within the squad, injuries at important moments, and the competition became much tougher. Clubs like El Merreikh Bentiu strengthened well and maintained consistency throughout the season. Sometimes that's football. We fought until the end, but the margins were very small."

Fernandez insists the club's back-to-back competitive campaigns, including battles for the top positions, should not be viewed as disappointments.

"We still competed at a high level and represented the club with pride. Playing in continental competitions and testing ourselves against some of the best teams in the region gave all of us invaluable experience. Those are moments I will always treasure."

Now, Terra says he is eager to apply the lessons learned across the border.

"I'm returning as a more complete player. Playing in another country teaches you discipline, resilience and how to adapt to different styles of football. I want to bring that experience into the Kenyan league and help whichever team I represent achieve its ambitions."

South Sudan's domestic game has grown steadily in recent years with increased competition for the league title and greater exposure through regional and continental tournaments.

Fernandez believes that progress will continue.

"People shouldn't underestimate South Sudan football anymore. The quality is improving every year, the infrastructure is getting better, and many talented young players are coming through. I'm grateful for my time there because it challenged me and made me better."

Fernandez now turns the page on a memorable chapter of his career, returning home with continental experience, leadership qualities and the ambition to make another impact in Kenyan football.
