Authorities from Uganda and South Sudan have successfully recovered and handed over 24 head of cattle stolen from Lamwo District, in a joint cross-border security operation.

The livestock, originally taken from Lamwaka B Village in Aringa Parish, Potika Sub-county, were raided between January and March 2026 and later traced to Teretenya in South Sudan, where coordinated efforts led to their recovery.

The handover ceremony was presided over by Lamwo Resident District Commissioner, William Komakech, who welcomed the development and called for continued efforts to recover all remaining stolen animals.

“This recovery gives hope to the affected families, because cattle are not only a source of wealth but also part of the Acholi cultural heritage,” Komakech said.

Representing South Sudanese authorities, Ikotos County Commissioner Timon Loboi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring that all remaining livestock are returned. He added that compensation mechanisms would be considered for animals lost during the process.

Loboi also emphasized the importance of strengthening peaceful coexistence and cross-border relations between communities in both countries.

Security officials described the operation as a sign of improving cooperation along the Uganda–South Sudan border.

The 5 Division Deputy Commander, Gai Mpadwa, noted that the joint effort reflects growing trust, coordination, and commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The handover was attended by security personnel and local leaders from both countries, highlighting ongoing bilateral collaboration in tackling cross-border livestock theft and related security challenges.
