South Sudan transportation systems are limited due to non-developed infrastructure, seasonal challenges related to weather conditions, and aviation gaps. Poor road infrastructure and limited logistical options including aviation services pose major challenges to response efforts. Therefore, the movement of humanitarian personnel and cargo from the major hubs to areas of operation, is challenging, if not impossible, without viable air transport service.

In this context, UNHAS South Sudan played an essential role in providing aviation support to humanitarian organizations operating in the country. With few commercial air services available to deep-field locations, the service remains the only common and reliable air transport service for the humanitarian community.
UNHAS South Sudan has been operating since the independence in 2011. Beforehand, the air service was provided by UNHAS Sudan through its fleet of aircraft located at various airports across the country since 2004. Following independence, the operations became concentrated in South Sudan, Juba and several other Hubs as formalized by the UNHAS Steering Committee.
