The Malakal Protection of Civilians (PoC) site, established in 2014 during the South Sudanese civil conflict, serves as a refuge for those fleeing violence and instability Originally set up as a temporary solution to protect vulnerable populations, the PoC has evolved into a critical hub for displaced individuals seeking safety and support amidst ongoing challenges.

As of 7 August 2025, 36,765 individuals (10,164 households) were biometrically registered as active residents in the Malakal (PoC) site, representing a 2 per cent increase in registered individuals since July 2025 following the latest biometric registration maintenance in the site.

Recognizing that there have been significant population changes since the last comprehensive biometric registration and verification, the International Organization for Migration (IOM's) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) conducts periodic population counts to monitor population dynamics and displacement trends This data is crucial for humanitarian organizations and policymakers, as it helps to assess the needs of the displaced population, allocate resources effectively, and plan for future interventions. By understanding the true population size and the dynamics within the PoC, stakeholders can better address issues such as food security, health services, and shelter requirements.
