Eastern Africa: Heavy Rainfall Expected over Some Areas

Southern Sudan, northern South Sudan, western Eritrea, eastern Sudan and cross-border regions of north-western Ethiopia are likely to receive very heavy rainfall in the next seven days, with warmer-than-usual temperatures predicted over most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa.

This is according to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development(IGAD’s) Climate Prediction and Application Centre(ICPAC) weekly weather forecast.

Most parts of Uganda, central to western Ethiopia, southern Tanzania, coastal and western Kenya, southern and northern Somalia, Djibouti, coastal Eritrea, central to eastern Ethiopia, south-eastern South Sudan and central Sudan are expected to experience moderate to light rainfall during the prediction period.

However, ICPAC also predicts that dry conditions are expected over northern Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, central to western Tanzania, central to northern Kenya, central to northern Somalia, and south-eastern parts of Ethiopia.

Furthermore, central to southern Sudan, eastern Uganda and other isolated areas in central Ethiopia and western South Sudan are predicted to experience drier than usual conditions.

Hot conditions (above 32℃) are predicted over central to northern Sudan, afar regions in Ethiopia, Djibouti, coastal regions of Eritrea, and north-western Somalia.

Other areas including South Sudan, eastern and northern Kenya, Somalia, eastern and western Tanzania, and central to northern Uganda, Ethiopian highlands, southern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, central to south-western Kenya, and northern to southern Tanzania are expected to experience temperatures varying from moderate to mild.
