2021 Volleyball Nations Cup: Nigeria Beat Stubborn South Sudan

Nigeria beat South Sudan 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) in their second match at the ongoing 2021 CAVB African Senior Volleyball Nations Cup in Rwanda.

The team bounced back from the defeat to Tunisia in their first match to record a resound victory against Sudanese on Wednesday and bright their chances of reaching the quarterfinals.

Head coach of Nigeria’s team, Usman Abdullah, described the match against South Sudan as physical, saying the experience won the game for Nigeria.

Abdullah said his target is to reach the Quarterfinals and beating South Sudan is the first step.

He said, “South Sudan lost 2-3 to Ethiopia on Tuesday and it was expected of them to become more physical against us. I am excited the boys used their experience to suppress the South Sudan boys.

“The team is not in Rwanda for jamboree, our minimum target is to be in the quarterfinals and if possible reach the semifinals. For those who know me, the word impossible is not in my dictionary.”.

“After losing to Tunisia, I drew the attention of the boys to their bad blocks and lack of defending after an attack and I am happy the boys adhered to every instruction from the coaching crew,” he said.

Abdullah said the next mission is to secure maximum points against Ethiopia on Friday.

“Our mission is simple, beat Ethiopia and qualify for the Quarterfinals. We are not going to joke with a set against Ethiopia, the boys mean serious business this time around.”

Nigeria will face Ethiopia on Friday by 4pm in their final match in Pool B.
