Six people were killed and 12 others were wounded in an attack yesterday on the area of Falouja in East Jebel Marra, South Darfur. Marra village in neighbouring Tawila, North Darfur, was raided as well. The number of victims is still unknown. The situation in El Geneina[1], West Darfur, remains calm.
Hasan Adam told Radio Dabanga yesterday that dozens of armed men in 4-wheel drive vehicles and others riding on camels, horses, and motor vehicles raided the area of Falouja and opened fire on the villagers.
Yahya Yousef (69), Ahmed Ibrahim (45), Hamed Yagoub (32), Dawoud Saleh, Zeinab Adam (39), and Maryam Mohamed (25) were killed. At least 12 others were injured, including three children.
The robbers then left, taking with them 172 cows, 81 camels, and 519 sheep, as well as grain stocks.
Marra
The source said that the attackers then moved to the village of Marra in Tawila locality, North Darfur, about 10 kilometres north of Falouja. They shot at the villagers and torched houses. The number of victims is unknown so far.
Adam noted that the gunmen were gathering for three days in the area of Dubo Neira before they began their attacks.
El Geneina
In El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, police reported on Sunday that the situation has begun to return to normal[2], thanks to the deployment of military and police forces throughout the town.
More than 60,000 people have taken refuge in some 45 schools and government facilities following attacks on El Geneina neighbourhoods and the two Kerending camps for displaced people[3] nine days ago.
The West Darfur Doctors Committee has appealed to the newly displaced not to seek refuge in health institutions or housing for medical personnel, to ensure the health care services can continue their work. The Maternity Ward and the COVID-19 Isolation Centre stopped providing services as they were transformed into shelters for the newly displaced.
Another estimated 40,000 people fled the violence to neighbouring villages. It is expected that many of them will return to El Geneina as well now the situation has calmed down.
The Director of Social Welfare in West Darfur, Jamal Fadul, expects that even more people will seek refuge in El Geneina as a result of the rampant insecurity in the state.
The World Food Programme has begun distributing food to the newly displaced in El Geneina.
