KSS raised over 45,000 nutritional packets for South Sudan kids

In February this year, the students of Kelowna Secondary School set their sights on making a local and global impact with the school's first Move 4 Mana challenge^[1].

It encourages students to get active by logging minutes of exercise on the Active for Good^[2] app. Minutes are then converted into points, which go toward the purchase of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) packets for children in South Sudan suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition. 

The packet is a carefully formulated nutritional product for at-risk kids that looks and tastes just like peanut butter, says team leader Toni Willoughby.

The Move4MANA challenge ended on Mar. 10, and was a huge success. 

“We met our goal of 300 lives, raising a total of 45,013 packets that will go to children in South Sudan suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition,” says Willoughby.

She says the team was very impressed with the completion of the school’s first Move4MANA challenge. 

“Throughout the challenge, I would hear people talking in the halls about how they were planning to do some sort of extra activity after school to get more points.

"It can be hard to introduce new initiatives or projects like Move4MANA into a school community and for it to quickly gain momentum, and I found that it gained momentum quicker than anticipated.

She says it was "great to hear that students were putting in their best effort into a project that I am very passionate about.”

They’re planning the second Move4MANA challenge for Oct. 2020, with an even greater goal.
