South Sudan: Humanitarian Snapshot (October 2018)

In October, the number of displaced people continued to rise to 1.97 million people. A total of 32,113 displaced people were registered in Juba’s two Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites, marking an 18 per cent drop since 2016 figures. Almost half of the decrease is due to the relocation of 3,379 people following inter-communal tensions in September. Civilians were reported to have been displaced from Minyori following continued fighting around Yei, Central Equatoria. Of those displaced, more than 629 have been identified in Yei town. Partners provided humanitarian assistance to the IDPs, but food remains the main gap. In Boma State, Jonglei, over 3,000 displaced people were reported to be in need of humanitarian assistance in Labarap County. They were reportedly displaced by cattle raiding, in which 12 children were reportedly abducted during fighting.

There was also inter-communal violence in Terekeka State, which reportedly killed nearly 20 people. Hostilities in Ngok and Ngisa in Greater Baggari continued, displacing some 920 people. There was a measles outbreak in Al Mahad IDP camp in Juba, and a reactive campaign reached at least 2,471 children under 5 years, and suspected measles cases in Malakal PoC site. There were two suspected Guinea worm cases in Tonj North and Gogrial West counties, Warrap.
