South Sudan’s humanitarian exhibition calls for funding

Deputy Special Representative in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan Alain Noudehou said Thursday that local NGOs implement 90 percent of the humanitarian work in the country and urged for more financial support to these organizations, adding that they form the first level of response during outbreak of conflict.

“South Sudan’s NGOs indeed continue to form the back bone of humanitarian work,” he said in Juba.

He added that so far they have distributed 48 percent of humanitarian development funds to enhance the work of 45 local-based NGOs and urged for increased partnership with the government and the UN to support local development.

“The more facilitation to national NGOs, the better they will be able to do their work. I believe that the expo will raise awareness on the contribution of NGOs,” Noudehou disclosed.

According to the UN, the ongoing more than three years of conflict has resulted in the killing of over 82 local aid workers by armed groups.

The humanitarian total response budget in 2017 totals 1.6 billion U.S. dollars, but only 1.2 billion dollars is available.

The Sudan Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF) plays a critical role in the humanitarian response. In 2016, 81.3 billion dollars was allocated toward various local NGOs doing development work. Enditem
