South Sudan’s Minister of Dams and Energy, Dhieu Mathok Diing, said soon the country will import electricity from its neighbouring states.
Addressing participants at a forum on energy and oil in Juba on Tuesday, Mathok admitted that only 1% of the population enjoy electricity, with a majority using generators for supply of power.
Mathok further said the main priority will be to power the capital city Juba with 100 megawatts from Uganda, through a project supported by the African Development Fund.
The minister pointed out that his ministry plans to supply the rest of the country with 400 megawatts from Uganda, Sudan through Renk in Upper Nile and another 100 megawatts from Ethiopia to Jonglei state.
