Lamwo- The government will liaise with South Sudan to demarcate the Uganda-South Sudan borderline as a way of resolving the inter-border disputes.

Disaster Preparedness minister also Lamwo County MP Hilary Onek ,made the remarks on Monday while paying homage to residents of Ngomoromo in Lokung Sub-county, Lamwo District who were invaded by South Sudanese last week claiming the area they occupy belongs to them.

Mr Onek said the African Union has secured funding to assist demarcate the Uganda-South Sudan border, the Uganda-Kenya border, and the Uganda–DR Congo border lines.

He said authorities from both countries will be engaged in a joint border mapping and survey based on colonial boundaries to ascertain the actual demarcations.

“We have agreed that an inter-ministerial committee consisting of Internal Affairs and Lands ministers from Uganda meet this week with their South Sudan counterparts to resolve the border impasse,” the minister said.

MeetingThe deputy commander UPDF 5th Division, Col Stephen Mugerwa, confirmed to Mr Onek that the governor of Magwi County in South Sudan has communicated to the UPDF pledging commitment of the attendance of South Sudan authorities.

Lokung Sub-county chairperson Noe Obora Opira said the rampant border disputes and impasse being fuelled by South Sudan is attributed to the deliberate removal of the markstones put during the colonial times.
