NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The United Nations says rebel forces in South Sudan attacked a town in the Upper Nile State.
The U.N. Mission in South Sudan said Sunday the attack on Nassir by forces loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar, is the most serious resumption of hostilities since the leaders of warring factions made fresh commitments in May to adhere to a peace agreement.
It was not immediately clear if there were casualties.
Acting head of UNMISS, Raisedon Zenenga, says the attack was launched in total disrespect of the presence in Nassir of the peace-deal monitors from a regional block known as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
South Sudan was plunged into violence in December after President Salva Kiir accused Machar of attempting a coup.
