South Sudanese people are committing suicide en masse

Whether it is due to depression or any other reason, but South Sudanese are currently committing suicide at an alarming rate, with over 12 people killing themselves within just a week.

So many people in Juba seem to be taking their own lives almost on daily basis, in a what looks like a new suicidal wave sweeping the already troubled East African Country.

The issue has prompted the South Sudan’s Central Equatorial State Security Committee, chaired by Governor Rabi Emmanuel, to convene an emergency meeting to address the issue.

During the security meeting which was held to discuss the increasing waves of suicide the officials also took time to debate on issues of general crime.

The Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Leon Abe Brown, read the report which indicated that 12 suicide cases had been recorded within a single week in Juba County, alongside a noticeable rise in thefts and armed robberies.

The South Sudan’s Security committee directed security agencies to enhance surveillance and pursue perpetrators. 

“It is high time security organs move to investigate the matter in addition to ensuring that all other forms of crime are solved once and for all,” Brown stated.

In yet another development, clashes erupted during a land allocation exercise which was being conducted in the Western Kurok area under the South Sudan Ministry of Housing, Lands, and Public Utilities.

The minister urged citizens to adhere to legal procedures, saying the documents and title deeds being issued in the process were valid, but some individuals attempted to sabotage the process through creating chaos.

While the Minister, Mr Brown affirmed the overall stability of the state’s security situation despite isolated incidents, he reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring stability and called for strengthened cooperation between citizens and security agencies.
