South Sudan minister of defense Kuol Manyang Juuk has downplayed the threats by the Sudanese president of pursuing rebels inside South Sudan territories, reports said on Friday.The minister has denied the Sudanese accusations of supporting or harboring the Sudanese rebels. He further confirmed that South Sudan did not deploy any forces on the border with Sudan as a reaction of Bashir’s statements.
“It was unfortunate and regrettable, Juba would not respond in the manner Khartoum has been conducting itself in the recent past in spite of the existing mechanisms through which complaints could be raised and addressed the minister told the press.
The SPLA forces have instructions to remain calm and restrain themselves from actions that might further escalate the tension. As the government, we do not have any hostile groups operating in this country against any one of our neighboring countries, including Sudan Mr. Mayang stressed.
President Bashir on Wednesday said his country would pursue Sudanese rebels inside South Sudan’s territory wherever they may be including Juba, accusing the South Sudanese government of hosting, training and arming rebel groups fighting against Khartoum.
Juba and Khartoum have repeatedly traded accusations of rebels support since the independence of South Sudan in 2011.
