Egypt, South Sudan Presidents offer mediation as violence escalates in Sudan

During the telephone conversation, the two leaders discussed recent developments in Sudan, "in light of the historical ties and distinguished fraternal relations between the three countries", and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, a statement by presidential spokesperson Ahmed Fahmy said.

Both leaders warned that "the escalation of violence will only lead to further deterioration of the situation, which may spiral out of control," according to the statement

They also urged all parties to prioritise wisdom and peaceful dialogue, and to uphold the higher interests of the Sudanese people, said Fahmy.

Meanwhile, clashes continue between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF have raged in the capital Khartoum and elsewhere in the country since the early hours of Saturday morning. Tens were reported killed or injured.

At least 56 civilians were killed, while dozens of the members of the rival forces were reported dead on Sunday^[1].

The Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate said on Sunday that around 600 people were wounded, including civilians and fighters.
