Authorities in the Unity State confirmed that a 58-year-old man was killed by unknown criminals on Tuesday night at the UN Mission in South Sudan Protection of Civilian (POC) Site in Bentiu.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Unity State information minister Gabriel Hon Makuei said, “The one who was killed (Tuesday) night is a 58-year-old man identified as Riek Tuol. He was killed in crossfire by the armed robbers who were looting people’s phones. This is where he got killed by mistake when these armed groups of robbers were trying to sneak into the IDPs fence to snatch the phones from the people."
He said the victim was killed by a stray bullet while he was in his house.
Hon added that the penetrators are still at large saying only 80 policemen are patrolling the camp.
“These robbers who killed the person are from outside the PoC Camp. These are night robbers. They are not within the PoC camp,” said Makuei.
Attempts to reach the Unity State police commissioner were futile due to poor communication network.
