Multi-Billion Projects That'll be Completed in 2021

A number of key development projects will be launched in 2021 by the Jubilee Government under President Uhuru Kenyatta. The infrastructural projects range from roads to housing projects under the Big 4 Agenda. 

Most of the projects angle towards job creation, elevating Kenya’s development status and easing transport services. Here are some of the mega projects that will be ready in 2021.

Ksh10.8 billion Lamu-Garsen Highway 

The Lamu-Garsen highway is expected it to be completed by March 2021. It is part of the Lamu Port - South Sudan - Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) and connects Isiolo and Lamu Counties.

The highway is 530 kilometres and is being constructed to bitumen standards. It was financed under the annuity programme where the government negotiated low-interest loans from banks to enable contractors to design, build and maintain it for up to eight years.

The government would then repay the loan in equal installments (annuity) over eight years from the time a given road is completed.

Ksh250 million virtual library 

The government will launch a virtual library located in Nairobi by June 2021. The ultra-modern devolution museum and library will be named after the Head of State - Uhuru Kenyatta Devolution Museum and Library. 

President Kenyatta stated that the Ksh250 million virtual library will ensure Kenyans have access to quality, timely and relevant information held by the Kenya National Library (KNLS) from the comfort of their homes.

It will have a capacity of 15 million publications and will be housed in the Ksh 5 billion G47 Ugatuzi Tower. 

Ksh5 billion Pangani Estate Redevelopment Project - July 2021

The affordable housing units will be completed in phases. Some houses will be ready by February, June and December 2021. 

The first batch of 150 tenants will move into thehouses under the Big 4 Agenda in February 2021. The government is keen on completing the other units in Pangani with nine floors already complete in Block 1. Block 2 is set to be completed in June 2021. 

Some of the self-serviced houses will be rented and others will be sold at between Ksh 1 million and Ksh 3 million. 

Lamu Port 

Lamu Port is located 200 miles north of Mombasa. The 32-berth Lamu Port is a greenfield port, part of the Lamu Port - South Sudan - Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor. 

The mega-project was launched during President Mwai Kibaki tenure and aims at enhancing Kenya’s position as a gateway and transport hub in the East African region. The 10Km shore length has the capacity to accommodate up to 23 berths, allocated spaces for ships. 

It will include the long term physical planning of Lamu Metropolis area to demarcate sections which will accommodate complimentary cargo handling facilities such as railway terminal, godowns, container freight stations, tank farms, refinery, lorry terminals and also the social facilities for migrant workers.

It is expected to be completed by December 2021. 

Ulinzi Sports Complex - No set cost 

President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the construction of the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi’s Lang’ata area on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. Its cost was, however, not disclosed. 

The ultra-modern sports facility will be built, managed by the Kenya Defence Forces and will be inside the Lang’ata Barracks. It is expected to completed and ready for use by October 2021. 

The complex will have various sporting facilities such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a 7,500 capacity football stadium, outdoor basketball and tennis courts as well as an indoor arena. 

The indoor arena will feature a gymnasium, volleyball court, martial arts, table tennis and other indoor sports facilities. Other than the sporting facilities, the complex will have a recreational nature trail and an aquatic centre for water-oriented sports.  

The sports complex will be open for use by sports personalities, military personnel and their families, recovering KDF staff at the Defence Forces Wellness Centre, KDF sporting disciplines.
