The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan will conduct its 14th visit to the country from September 7 to 10, 2026, amid renewed armed conflict, rising political tensions and growing threats to civilians and the peace process.
Chairperson Yasmin Sooka will lead the mission alongside Commissioners Barney Afako and Carlos Castresana Fernández. The delegation will meet government officials, political and security actors, civil society groups, victims, survivors, humanitarian partners and legal professionals.
The commissioners will assess the country’s human rights, humanitarian, political and security situation, including displacement caused by renewed hostilities and the continued weakening of the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement.
They will also examine conditions for a peaceful, inclusive and credible democratic transition as South Sudan prepares for its first national elections since gaining independence in 2011.
Findings from the mission will inform the commission’s reports to the UN Human Rights Council and its work on preventing human rights violations and atrocity crimes, promoting accountability and supporting sustainable peace.
The commissioners will present their preliminary findings at a press conference in Juba on September 10, 2026. Established in March 2016, the independent commission’s mandate has been renewed annually by the UN Human Rights Council.
