"If South Sudan is breaking up due to tribal hegemony, what will save the small tribes in the three regions from being oppressed by the big tribes – or are we surrendering every small tribe to the dictatorship of the big tribe in each region...?"
By Dr Alfred Sebit Lokuji
“Balkanization” is a term that now refers to huge countries breaking up into little countries as occurred in the Balkans. It is no longer a far-away that “can never happen to us.” Like all other nations and nationalists, we had a share of big gains accompanied by huge errors.
Where nationalists surpass others is that they learn from these errors and emerge wiser and stronger. Short-sightedness leads to a break up that is simply too huge to analyze now – and to a new term that surpasses Balkanization! South-Sudanization is much more than Bulkanization. It is not only breaking up, BUT also destroying each other in the process.
I find little education in listing the litany of Sweat, Tears, and Blood that “Southerners” suffered over centuries – thus earning the name Southerners or Junubin! Everyone should not forget these decades upon decades of tears, sweat, and blood! Are all mega demonic tribalists, lead by the JCE, people who suffer from a short attention span?
The idea of “Rule you for a hundred” years – even for one year – without one’s compliance is simply a violation of human rights – even if De Klerk and others rejected the idea that tribal hegemony is a violation of human rights.
There is a cacophonic reaction to tribalism that sanitizes conversations about regionalism – Equatoria, Bahr el Ghazal, and Upper Nile. If South Sudan is breaking up due to tribal hegemony, what will save the small tribes in the three regions from being oppressed by the big tribes – or are we surrendering every small tribe to the dictatorship of the big tribe in each region – a la Jieng Council of Elders.
The mention of JCE here may provoke some Dinka fellow citizens to protest that “all Dinkas” are being attacked! On the contrary, the majority innocent Dinka are being defended. And by rejecting Equatorianism , Bahr-el-Ghazalism, or Upper-Nilism, all creatures of God are being protected. The Tribalism that happens in South Sudan can logically occur everywhere, including Equatoria!
In conclusion, anyone and everyone who honors the dignity of South Sudanese should reject all trends of thought and actions that undermine South Sudanese! It is an obligation of each member of the 64 tribes to respect South Sudan by respecting each tribe – “e pluribus unum” – reads a currency somewhere. If Kiir and his group are the problem, all of us should agree on a way to “persuade” Kiir to hand the button to the next relay runner – thus protecting South Sudan.
However, should anyone decide that South Sudan is no longer a worth-while project, they should make such a declaration, and disclose their new conglomeration of citizens! This is necessary so that all of us who dream of a South Sudan nation can wake up and dream of alternatives.
