At least 28 people have been killed and 20 injured during a cattle raid in South Sudan.

The attackers have also stolen around 3000 cattle in Northern Liech state, South Sudan Information Minister Lam Tunguar told German news agency dpa.

Children were among the victims in the Friday night raid, and several of the injured were being treated for gunshot wounds in a hospital in the state capital Bentiu.

Despite a peace deal brokered last year, cattle rustling has continued unabated in the troubled country.

Cattle raiding has occurred for centuries in the region and children are sometimes also abducted during raids, to be used as domestic slaves.
