Overview
Over the course of South Sudan’s five-year-long civil war, violent clashes between armed groups have seen thousands of citizens killed and over four million forcibly displaced from their homes. Despite longstanding prohibitions on the supply of weapons to South Sudan, the prevalence of arms, ammunition and other military equipment among all parties to the conflict raises serious questions about the facilitators of such transfers and the efficacy of regulations. With a new UN arms embargo on South Sudan having been imposed in July 2018, a continuing focus upon its effective enforcement will be vital if the flow of arms into the country is to be stemmed.
This event will launch the Conflict Armament Research report, Weapon Supplies into South Sudan’s Civil War: Regional Retransfers and International Intermediaries. Speakers will discuss the factors contributing to the supply and diversion of weaponry into South Sudan, its impact upon the conflict’s major theatres and the priorities for international efforts to prevent future arms supplies.
THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL AND REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED.
