The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has concluded a three-day field training in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State, bringing regional efforts on inclusive land governance and peace building closer to grassroots communities.

The training, held from 29th September to 1st October 2026 , brought together members of customary institutions and youth and women leaders from Obbo, Pajok, Mugale and Pageri Payams to strengthen their capacity to address land-related disputes and promote inclusive access to justice. Through practical sessions on land disputes, inclusive customary justice, mediation and negotiation, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and case simulations , participants enhanced their skills and strengthened locally driven approaches to resolving disputes in a peaceful and equitable manner. Representing the IGAD Executive Secretary, HE Dr Workneh Gebeyehu , IGAD Head of Mission to South Sudan Dr Victoria Anib underscored the importance of strengthening community-level mechanisms that are inclusive and responsive to the realities faced by women and other community members.

The training contributed to advancing IGAD’s commitment to translating regional policy frameworks into practical, community-level action in areas affected by displacement and natural resource-related challenges. By targeting community leaders, customary authorities, and local stakeholders, the intervention strengthened local capacities to address disputes through peaceful, inclusive, and culturally appropriate mechanisms. For communities, effective customary justice and dispute resolution systems remain essential for preventing and mitigating conflicts, fostering peaceful coexistence, strengthening social cohesion, and promoting sustainable land governance. Strengthening these locally trusted mechanisms enhances resilience and supports broader peacebuilding and stabilization efforts among communities.

By placing communities and their institutions at the center of implementation, IGAD is strengthening local ownership, reinforcing indigenous capacities, and institutionalising community-driven approaches to conflict prevention and land governance that lays the foundation for enduring peace, social cohesion, and resilience across the IGAD region.
