The Government of the Republic of South Sudan on Tuesday welcomed Sudan’s return and the reactivation of its membership in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Juba and circulated by IGAD, the ministry said that Sudan’s return to the organization—of which it is among the founding member states—strengthens its work, noting that full membership enhances the organization’s effectiveness in addressing regional issues. The statement described Sudan’s decision to reactivate its membership as “wise.”
On February 9, Djibouti, which currently holds the rotating chairmanship of IGAD, announced Sudan’s return to the organization, a step viewed as reinforcing regional cohesion.
Sudan had suspended its membership in IGAD on January 20, 2024, in protest against the participation of the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemeti,” in an IGAD heads-of-state summit held in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti said in a statement that it “welcomes Sudan’s return to membership in IGAD, which was effected through an official letter sent by the Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs to the organization’s Executive Secretary.”
