Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has received a written message from South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit concerning bilateral relations and prospects for expanding cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of oil, energy and trade.
According to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA), the message was delivered during a meeting held on Sunday in Port Sudan between Burhan and a South Sudanese delegation led by Tut Gatluak, President Kiir’s security adviser. The meeting was attended by Sudan’s Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muawiya Othman Khalid.
SUNA reported that the message focused on strengthening relations between Khartoum and Juba and enhancing joint cooperation across a range of sectors. Following the meeting, Khalid said Burhan had instructed all relevant state institutions, at both ministerial and technical levels, to engage with their South Sudanese counterparts to discuss issues of mutual interest.
He added that priority would be given to cooperation in vital sectors, including energy, oil, trade and the wider economy, alongside political relations between the two countries.
The development comes days after the South Sudanese government announced an agreement with the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to assume responsibility for securing facilities at the Heglig oil field in West Kordofan State. The move followed the RSF’s seizure of the oil field last Monday.
Relations between Sudan and South Sudan are closely linked to energy cooperation, with oil infrastructure and exports remaining a key area of shared interest for both countries amid ongoing instability in Sudan.
