Sudan Continues to Show Signs of Hope for Future: Reopens Border with South Sudan

09/16/2019 Sudan (International Christian Concern) – Sudan and South Sudan have had terrible relation ever since the southern country gained its independence in 2011. There have been accusations that Sudan has helped the rebels in South Sudan and instigated the fighting. However, since the ouster of ex-president Omar al-Bashir, there has been hope that the country will move towards more freedom and democracy.

This became much more of a reality this month’s when the military and protest leaders signed the new transitional government agreement. After this, they elected a civilian Prime Minister, created the Civilian Majority Sovereign Council, and have started planning elections for 2022. All of these moves are signs that the country is ready and trying for change.

Another big sign came this past weekend, when the president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, and the prime Minister of Sudan, Abdalla Hamdok, signed a deal to reopen borders. This reopening is meant to allow more trade and freedom of movement between the countries. It is hopefully a big step forward as well for democracy. Less than a decade ago, both countries were one. This means that during the split, family and friends were torn apart. With this reopening, there is a large opportunity for reconciliation and growth. Please pray for the leaders of both countries, to have wisdom, patience and courage in the coming months. Please also pray for the safety and freedom of our brothers and sisters in both countries who still suffer persecution and violence, though from very different forms.
