President of Sudan Football Association, Dr. Mutasim Gafaar, has been elected the new president of the council of east and central Africa football associations [CECAFA] during the regional Africa football body’s election in Addis Ababa on Friday.
The new president pocketed 6 votes out of the ten votes casted at the election beating his closest contender, Lawrence Mulindwa from Uganda who generated three votes.
Vincent Nzamwita [Rwanda] got only one vote possibly that of his country, while the fourth would be challenger, Junedin Basha [Ethiopia] withdrew from the fight for CECAFA presidency in the last minute.
Outgoing CECAFA president, Ledodegar Tenga of Tanzania welcomed the new regional Africa football body’s president. “Mutasim is a visionary man who is capable of leading the region to a greater development” Mr. Tenga said as he welcomed the president elected.
“I am very proud that I had given my best in the last eight years I served as CECAFA president” said Mr. Tenga adding he will always be available for advice and consultations in the future.
Mr. Tenga took over the role from the late Dennis Obua of Uganda in December 2007.
New CECAFA president, Dr. Mutasim Gafaar, said he was successful in Sudan and was hopeful he will be more successful in his new role as CECAFA leader. He said he was not happy with the region’s performance in the 2018 FIFA world cup qualifiers.
President Dr. Mutasim Gafaar, promised that during his leadership the CECAFA region will make amendments to recover from the past losses to culminate in more football progress than ever before.
Four executive committee members have also been elected, while long time servicing Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye [Kenya] will continue his role as secretary General.

Abdiqani Said Arab [Somalia], Alei Ghabur Goc [South Sudan], Souleiman Hassan Waberi [Djibouti] and Habimona Aimable of Burundi.
Somalia’s FA president, Abdiqani Said Arab, is the only man from the previous executive committee who has retained his position. He will be serving as CECAFA executive committee member for a 5th term.
