WEELKLY ADVICE TO THE LEADERS OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN:
There are twelve qualities of good leadership:
Most people have a hard time explaining what it means to be a good leader. However, everyone can recognize that sort of leadership when they see, experience or are in the presence of it.
While knowing a great leader can certainly improve the quality of our lives, understanding how to become one yourself is the most important step of achieving your own successful life and career.
People with strong leadership qualities are almost always the ones that rise above the crowd. For you, the good news is that you can study, learn and apply good leadership traits to your life in a purposeful way.
(1) Be Trustworthy
Trust is the basis for almost all the relationships in your life. Without trust, it\'s impossible to create healthy and productive environments, either with work or personal situations.
Be aware that others are watching you ... assessing your values system and integrity. People want to be assured that their trust, followed closely by their respect is being placed in a safe place -- your hands -- and that they are indeed wise to follow where you lead.
When people trust you, they are more willing to give their best, as they know that they always get your best. This leadership quality is sometime referred as integrity or honor, but all these terms have the same basic meaning: you say what you do and do what you say- period.
(2) Inspire People to Work Toward The Vision
You can\'t push people to believe in or want to work toward the organizational vision and goals, but rather, one of the qualities of good leadership is that you guide, lead, and inspire people to want to participate in the process of moving toward the vision
Inspiring others is one of the most important qualities of good leadership ... making sure this is high on your list of skills to enhance?
(3) Be Self Aware and Insightful About Your Impact on Others
One of the most important qualities of good leadership is that the individual is aware of himself or herself ... their abilities and the impact that they have on others.
If this doesn\'t come naturally to you, work on actively putting yourself in others\' shoes. Recognize how you affect things and anticipate how others will react to your decisions and personality. While creating this analytical dialogue can seem foreign at first, you will find that it comes quite naturally with time and practice.
(4) Accept Responsibility for Your Actions
Those who have qualities of good leadership never pass the buck. In fact, the best leaders will not only take responsibility for their own mistakes, but also shield their team from negative consequences, going to bat for them.
As a leader, always remember that the buck stops with you.
We seem to be raising a society of people who prefer to blame others for their feelings, circumstances and lack of success.
True leaders are masters at accepting responsibility for all that comes their way and taking ownership and responsibility for getting things back on track. Blaming, justifying and excuse making just isn\'t in their responsibility
(5) Have High Self Worth and Self Esteem
You might not think that how you feel about yourself has a whole lot to do with how others perceive you or how effective you can be at taking charge of a group situation. However, it would be a huge mistake to make this assumption. Every individual is either their own best friend or their own worst enemy.
How you feel about yourself often leads to subconscious patterns. Those with a negative self worth may have many other leadership qualities, but sabotage their own efforts with a deep belief that they aren\'t good enough to carry the day.
Dealing with self esteem can seem like a touchy-feely waste of time, but that is absolutely not the case. It is crucial to your success and leadership ability.
(6) Leadership versus Management
There is quite a fine line between these two styles. While leader may certainly manage, managers rarely lead. That What Makes a Good Leader, to be champion leader
(7) Intelligence and Scholarship
(8) A leader should be highly intelligent. A leader should be able to examine and solve the problem of the followers quickly and in right manner. He should possess good judgment and decision making abilities. Opinion and judgment should be formed on the basis of facts and without prejudice. He should be a person of maturity and logical mind.
(9) Communication Skill
A leader should be a good and effective communicator. Goals and procedures of the organization should be communicated clearly, precisely and effectively. Only then it will be possible to convince, persuade and stimulate subordinates to action. This will also enable him to maintain good relationship with followers and recognize their problems and feelings.
(10)Listening Skill
The leader can be well informed only if he listens to other problems. Receiving feedback about oneself is most important. A leader should show understanding of others view points. He should understand and accept what others say.
(11) Ability to inspire and guide followers
A leader should be a good example for others. The leader should have the ability to inspire and guide others. He or she should tell them the best possible manner for doing a job. People should feel deeply involved with work and be able to work together as a team. A leader should be able to bring together all members as a team.
(12) Self-confidence and Sense of Responsibility
A leader must have confidence in his own ability to accomplish tasks and meet the needs in all challenging situations. He should be fully responsible for achieving the goals of an organization. For this, he should possess good knowledge about all the jobs. He should be familiar with the work of his subordinates. He should be ready to own the consequences of any action and share the credit with the subordinates.
(13) Empathy
The ability of a person to look at things from others point of view is known as empathy. A leader should be able to empathize and see from others perspective. A leader with empathy is more open to feedback about himself. It is important to be in touch with others and understand their problems and view point. These leaders are most effective in managing themselves and managing relationship.
Although the above qualities contribute to the success of leadership, the relative importance of qualities cannot be stated categorically. The success of leadership also depends upon the attitude of followers and the situations.
