JUBA, South Sudan – A court in South Sudan has heard allegations of treason against four political leaders accused of plotting to topple President Salva Kiir.
The case comes three months after massive violence broke out in the country. Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.
The four facing charges include the ruling party's former secretary general, the former national security minister, the former ambassador to the U.S., and a former deputy defense minister. Seven others arrested were sent to neighboring Kenya.
Elsewhere, a U.N. military commander, Maj. Gen. Delali Johnson Sakyi, said Tuesday that weapons recently found in U.N. trucks were intended for his Ghanaian troops. Sakyi said the shipment contained no land mines despite claims made after video of the weapons circulated on social media sites.
